The natural beauty, breathtaking vistas of fall colors, and visual delights of the mountain drive traverse the Ouachita Mountains. Talimena Scenic Byway is a stunning forty-five-minute, 22-mile cruise in southeast Oklahoma.
This short road trip takes U.S. Highway 59 from east of Page, on the Arkansas state line. It continues through the forested valleys of the Ouachita Mountains and concludes in Heavener. Some steep grades and sharp curves pass a number of historic sites and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The scenic turnouts are great places to see the golden valleys of a majestic byway and the scenic colors beginning in early November, and continuing through the fall. We made the trip along the Talimena Scenic Byway during the early summer months but want to go back in Autumn. With the rain and clouds, we experienced limited visibility. However, you could still see some of the spectacular views of the Ouachita Mountains.
The Ouachita National Forest surrounds the short drive and is a great place to see a large number of tree species, including shortleaf pine, and sugar maple. blackjack oak, black hickory, and white oak trees. Interestingly, the highest point in Oklahoma is here, on the crest of Rich Mountain. Rich Mountain Fire Tower is located a few miles east of the state line in Arkansas.
The Black Fork and Winding Stair Mountain Wilderness Areas both border the southern half of Mountain Gateway Scenic Drive. Numerous side roads along the byway offer seclusion as well as provide access to natural springs and roadside attractions. To learn more about the Talimena Scenic Byway, their website is HERE.
