Pricing
The cruise industry entices travelers by making special offers like giving onboard credits or free drinks. There are several major cruise lines. Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, and Princess Cruises, just to name a few. They all compete with each other in a way that keeps prices reasonable for the consumer.
The best cruise might be a free cruise, but those are rare. So the best way to begin might be to look at a luxury cruise line first. And then compare cruise ships with each other. The prices vary tremendously. But when you compare them including the add-ons, packages are usually closer to each other than it looks at first glance.
The cruise lines are in the business of making money. So the initial ticket can be thought of as a starter kit for the cruise. Specialty dining and exclusive events, shipboard shopping, and onshore excursions are all ways to upcharge vacationers. Another thing to keep in mind is the prices change over time. Generally, the tickets bought well in advance of the departure date are lower than the last-minute purchases.
During some parts of the year, vessels are relocated from one part of the world to another. An example of this occurs every Autumn. Cruise lines move their ships from the United States to Europe for a season of European cruises. These voyages are more affordable than Alaskan cruises, for example. But they don’t have shore days and there’s always the problem of having to get a one-way ticket back home.
