While there’s no shortage of great zoos throughout the country, Texas is home to some truly unique and exciting wildlife parks that are perfect for a family-friendly day trip. Put on some sunscreen, tie your favorite walking shoes, and load up the kids!
Next, grab your car keys, and let’s take a drive through the most enchanting zoos not only in The Lone Star State but in the United States:
1. Houston Zoo – Houston, TX
Located in the heart of Houston’s Hermann Park, the family-friendly Houston Zoo is the second most visited zoo in the state. With over 6,000 animals representing over 900 species, there’s intrigue for everyone at this amazing wildlife park. Highlights include the Kipp Aquarium, wildlife from South America, the African Forest, and the McNair Habitat for Asian Elephants. Here, you and the kids can see black bears, exotic animals as well as some endangered species.
2. San Antonio Zoo – San Antonio, TX
Another one of the largest zoos in the country, the San Antonio Zoo is a must-visit destination for any animal lover. With over 8,500 animals representing 750 different species, this zoo offers a truly immersive experience. Don’t miss the petting zoo, African Plains, the Gibbon Forest, or the exciting Centennial Carousel. You and your kids will marvel at the most complete habitats for Komodo dragons, mountain lions, ring-tailed lemurs, mountain gorillas, and western lowland gorillas, to name a few.
3. Fort Worth Zoo – Fort Worth, TX
Located just west of downtown Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Zoo is often rated as the top zoo in North America. With over 7,000 animals representing 556 animal species, Texas’ oldest zoo is kid-friendly and has something for everyone. Highlights include natural habitats of the African Savanna, the Australian Outback, and the Asian Falls.
4. Dallas Zoo – Dallas, TX
Ever since it was founded in 1888, the Dallas Zoo is the oldest and largest zoo in Texas. The downtown Dallas over 2,000 different animals representing 406 species. This zoo is a great place to learn about the world’s diverse wildlife. Before you leave, make sure you don’t miss the award-winning Giants of the Savanna exhibit. It features elephants, African lions, giraffes, and other African animals in their natural habitats. A non-profit organization, the zoo’s gift shop supports its mission.
5. Cameron Park Zoo – Waco, TX
Located in the heart of Waco’s beautiful Cameron Park, the Cameron Park Zoo is a hidden gem that’s well worth a visit. With over 1,700 animals representing 300 species, this zoo offers a more intimate and personal experience than some of the larger parks. Don’t miss the beautiful Brazos River Country exhibit, which features animals native to the region.
6. Texas State Aquarium – Corpus Christi, TX
While not technically a zoo, the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in marine life. With over 330 species of fish, birds, and mammals, this aquarium offers an exciting and educational experience for all ages. Highlights include the Hawn Wild Flight Theater, the Dolphin Bay show, and the Caribbean Journey exhibit.
