Looking For a Safe Community? Altus OK Is Small-Town At Its Best

Altus, Oklahoma is a small Jackson County town located in southwest Oklahoma. The Altus Chamber of Commerce reports a population of approximately 20,000 people. It’s known for its rich history, friendly locals, and beautiful landscape. If you’re looking for a peaceful and charming place to visit, Altus is definitely worth checking out.

Altus Oklahoma is a quaint little town in central Oklahoma.

Altus AFB

One of the main attractions in town is the Altus Air Force Base. This important base is home to the 97th Air Mobility Wing. Altus AFB is responsible for training and educating future generations of Airmen and women. It’s a hub of enterprise for the local community. The base has a long and storied history, dating back to the World War II era. It continues to play a critical role in the U.S. military today.

Historic Attractions

Aside from the Air Force Base, Altus also boasts a number of other attractions that are worth visiting. For example, the Museum of the Western Prairie is a great place to learn about area’s history. Did you know Quanah Parker and his Cherokees and other Native American tribes once called the region home? The museum also showcases exhibits on the cattle industry, agriculture, and the oil boom. All these were significant events in the area in the early 1900s.

Nature

Another popular attraction in Altus is the Quartz Mountain Nature Park, which is located just outside the city limits. The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with hiking trails, campgrounds, and scenic vistas aplenty. Visitors can also rent boats and explore the nearby Lake Altus-Lugert, or Tom Steed Reservoir, both popular spots for fishing and water sports.

Local Life

In terms of dining and entertainment, Altus has a few great options. There are several locally-owned restaurants that serve up delicious, home-cooked meals. You can find a few chain eateries like Sonic Drive-In, where you can indulge in their famous cherry limeade. The Altus Golf Course is another popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The challenging course offers stunning views of the flat Oklahoma landscape.

It’s Time to Go to Altus!

If you’re moving here, there are plenty of real estate listings and brokerage firms to help you find your home. Areas like Nocona Hills and the city of Wichita Falls, just across the Oklahoma border in Texas, offer easy access to Altus and its amenities.

Altus is a wonderful small town on the southern Oklahoma Prairie that offers a great quality of life and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re a military retiree, a service member stationed at the Altus Air Force Base, or just someone looking for a peaceful place to call home, Altus Oklahoma has a lot to offer.
