As the sun rose above the horizon on the MSC Divina’s Atlantic repositioning cruise from Genoa, Italy, to Miami, the relaxing cruise took an unexpected turn on December 4, 2023. Leah and I, two passengers aboard the European vessel, found ourselves in the middle of a maritime tale that showed both urgency and the crew’s unwavering professionalism. While certainly unplanned, the transfer of a passenger from the cruise ship to the hospital was very well orchestrated. And the crew was well-prepared for that eventuality.
The Unexpected Hospital Trip from the Cruise Ship
We saw firsthand the true essence of maritime operations when our captain, with a calm demeanor, made a ship-wide announcement. He relayed crucial information about a medical emergency unfolding on board. A fellow passenger required urgent air evaluation, prompting the decision to alter course and rendezvous with another vessel equipped with an onboard helicopter. Native speakers of several other languages repeated the announcement. The staff and crew reassured us that they were capably resolving the emergency situation.
The Professionalism
As the Divina gracefully changed its trajectory, it became evident that the crew was well-versed in handling unforeseen circumstances such as this. The entire process, from the captain’s announcement to the final medical evaluation, unfolded with a seamless blend of efficiency and empathy.
A typical passenger might not be privy to the meticulous coordination that happens behind the scenes during such incidents. The crew, trained to handle emergencies at sea, swiftly enacted protocols. They worked to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on board. From communication systems buzzing with updates to the discrete movements of the medical team, the crew orchestrated every element with precision.
During the two-hour journey to the rendezvous position, the crew kept us passengers aware of what was happening. The staff’s transparent communication not only reassured us but also set clear expectations. Those expectations included refraining from accessing the open-air decks until after the medical evaluation had taken place. Crewmembers stood posted at all entrances/exits to those spaces.
I saw the crew members’ professionalism during this event on my way to the dining room. I saw a guest insisting to go outside and watch the airlift. The crew calmly held their positions and followed the Captain’s orders to a tee. The passenger eventually gave up his efforts and left the area.
In moments like these, the crew’s professionalism and commitment to passenger safety shine brightest. The ability to adapt to unforeseen challenges and prioritize the well-being of those on board was incredible. Their actions were a testament to the meticulous training and dedication of the maritime professionals operating every one of the ship’s duty stations.
The Medivac- From Cruise Ship to Hospital
The Divina headed toward the largest of the Canary Islands at the same time the rescue vessel headed our way. The ships met, and both stopped in the water within a hundred nautical miles of the onset. The helicopter lowered a rescue basket and took the patient to the rescue ship. They then returned to evacuate their companion and luggage. We don’t need to know any details about what medical need prompted the emergency. We were just praying for positive outcomes.
As we resume our course to Miami, the echoes of this incident linger as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of travel. Yet, it is a testament to the capabilities and expertise of the crew who navigate not just the seas. But also unexpected twists on the cruise, ensuring passengers like us experience the true spirit of maritime care.
