The city of Wichita Falls Texas is a small city on TX HWY 287 between Houston and Denver. You probably knew that, but did you know it is the most maneuverable city of over 100,000 residents in the United States? You can drive anywhere in town to almost anywhere else in the city limits in fifteen minutes or less.
Downtown Wichita Falls, Texas
WF (as it’s commonly referred to by lots of locals) has an aging downtown and is experiencing rejuvenation to some extent. Wineries, tap rooms, great dining options, and up-to-date apartments are all within walking distance of one another. And the streets and sidewalks are in new condition. There is a local food truck park near the Farmers Market and Maniac’s Mansion is a great place for teens to hang out.
Moody Auditorium hosts amazing and relevant music acts, the MPEC is home to a semi-pro hockey team and a large number of annual events such as the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred (HHH for the acronym-prone locals) bicycle event. The Flyover is the upper level of I-44, the shortest interstate highway in the world, and underneath is a refuge for the poverty-stricken where they can receive much-needed social services, such as the Wichita Falls Area Foodbank, the Salvation Army of Wichita Falls, Texas, Habitat for Humanity, Patsy’s House and many other valuable programs.
MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY
This fine Liberal Arts University attracts students from across Texoma and western North Texas for affordable high-quality education. MSU shares some athletic facilities such as Memorial Stadium (off Midwestern Parkway) with the local high schools. During the Holidays, make sure you visit the Burns-MSU Fantasy of Lights. It is completely free and such a joy to experience.
Parks in Wichita Falls, Texas
There are several parks throughout the city of Wichita Falls, Texas. Lucy Park is a 178-acre regional park with hiking trails, bicycling trails, a duck pond, pavilions, and lots of wooded and open spaces for everyone to enjoy. Further, 64-acre Hamilton Park has excellent tennis and other recreation facilities and is located near the MSU campus. Your Kids will love summer camp at River Bend Nature Center (RNBC, for the acronym-minded of you) and other events Nature Tots, Science Saturday, and ElectricCritter are just a few of the other regular events here!
Conclusion
We haven’t scratched the surface- the Patterson Classic Car Museum is free for everyone. Scores of Painted Horses dot the city and memorialize important people. Sheppard Air Force Base contributes to the vitality and economy of the area.
